READ DL – Register now to take part in the next Read DL reading adventure
The READ DL 2018 committee are excited to bring Donegal its next collective reading adventure from 18th January to the 1st March 2018.
This year’s chosen title is ‘A Monster Calls’ by the twice Carnegie Medal-winning author Patrick Ness. This novel explores love, loss and hope in a way that is deep and thought provoking. Told through the eyes of thirteen year old Conor, readers will be captivated by the central character’s strength and courage.
READ DL has grown in strength from its humble beginnings a number of years ago and aims to bring Donegal communities together by giving them a shared experience of reading the one book for a period of time during the year. Children and their families in Donegal are encouraged to read and discuss the chosen book, along with taking part in various activities held in schools, libraries and in the community.
Brian McGonagle from the LYIT is encouraging everyone to take part in this one book, one community reading initiative which has been starting conversations and inspiring a passion for reading all over the county for a number of years. “We are asking primary schools, secondary schools and groups to register with us for this year’s initiative where they can avail of a set of books at a very favourable price.”
Karen Sheehy from Donegal County Library Service added that libraries and Taobh Tíre Centres across the county will be well stocked with this year’s title for individuals, families and smaller groups to avail of from the 18th January.
READ DL is all about coming together. The objective of this project is to get as many people reading a book from a particular author at the same time, building not only a sense of community but also promoting and valuing the importance of literacy within our communities. The READ DL committee would like to encourage those who don’t read as often as they would like to or have in the past to begin again and what better way than to participate in this year’s READ DL challenge. So come on DONEGAL!!
Registration is now open and groups and schools can register by visiting the new website www.readdonegal.com. The deadline for registration is Friday 8th December and all necessary information is available on the website.
