Europe Day, 9th May 2023,  Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny

Register today and celebrate Europe Day and EU50, Ireland’s 50th Anniversary of joining the EU at a conference to be held in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny on 9th May 2023.  Registration is now open on Donegal.ie/europeday or by searching on Eventbrite.

This event has been funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs under their Communicating Europe Initiative for Local Authority led EU50 events and has been made possible through collaboration between Europe Direct Letterkenny and Donegal County Council’s Economic Development teams.

Europe Day celebrates Europe’s achievements and unity and commemorates the signing of the Schuman Declaration on 9 May 1950. This ambitious plan to secure long-term peace in post-war Europe laid the early foundations for what is now the European Union.  This Europe Day event is one of a wide range of events and activities across the EU member states happening today and over the coming days.

The Government’s EU50 programme marks Ireland’s 50 years of EU membership since our decision to join the then EEC in 1972. Ireland’s 50 years of EU membership has coincided with a radical economic and social transformation of our country. This event aims to deepen public awareness of the role that the European Union plays in our daily lives at a local and regional level. MC for the day will be Brendan Mooney, European Programmes Manager from the Northern and Western Regional Assembly.

Headline speaker will be Stephen Kinsella, Professor of Economics at the University of Limerick and author of Ireland in 2050: How we will Live. Ireland in 2050 examines the changes in Ireland’s economy, culture, and society from 1950 to 2050.

The conference will also include an acapella performance from the New Land Choir performed by people from all over Europe, a wonderful example of an initiative that brings people together in a really positive way through the medium of song.

There will be intervention from our MEP’s Chris MacManus, Ming Flanagan and Colm Markey who will give us their perspectives on Ireland’s involvement in the EU. In addition Maria Walsh MEP will be doing a live video call with pupils from Scoil Mhuire in Buncrana Library to promote Europe Day.

This is a free event including lunch. Everyone welcome. Register on Donegal.ie/europeday
