“United in Diversity” is the motto of the European Union and the Europe Direct Information Centre Donegal & Gaeltacht keeps this motto in mind by helping all citizens European or otherwise, to become more familiar with the structure and development of the European Union.
Europe Direct Information Centre (EDIC), Central Library, Letterkenny is the main EDIC for Donegal, one of eight such centres throughout the country. In addition, Leabharlann Phobail Ghaoth Dobhair provides a satellite Europe Direct service with information provision in the Irish language. Each centre provides a range of services, including free publications, brochures and guides; an on-the-spot question and answer service; computers with access to the EU’s Europa website – www.europa.eu ; a meeting room capable of hosting talks, promotional events etc. on European matters and free-phone access to the Europe Direct call centre in Brussels.
Since the centre’s launch in 2005 we have run a number of promotional events to highlight the Europe Direct Information Centre and to encourage debate and discussion on European issues. Events include multicultural workshops for children/young adults, exhibitions, storytelling from Europe, EU quizzes and regular class visits as well as various informative exhibitions on relevant EU themes.
