Debating Science Issues

Debating Science Issues Highlights

Hear the scientists of tomorrow debate the biomedical issues of today.

Funded by a Wellcome Trust People Award and coordinated by 8 research, medical and science centres, Debating Science Issues (DSI) is a dynamic competition which invites secondary school students to engage in discussion and debate on the cultural, societal and ethical implications of advances in biomedical science.

Four schools in Donegal recently took part in the first round of this competition. Phobail Scoil Gaoth Dobhair and St. Eunan's College, Letterkenny met on Wednesday 18 January 2012 in Leabharlann Phobal Gaoth Dobhair with St. Eunan's College emerging as the victors. Magh Ene College, Bundoran and Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town met in Bundoran Community Library on Thursday 26 January 2012 with Abbey Vocational School winning that debate. The topic of the debates focused on embryonic stem cell research.

The next round of the competition will take place in Central Library, Letterkenny in late February between these two winning teams. The topic for debate will be on GM foods.
