Assistive Technology

Donegal County Libraries house collections of large print books, talking books (books on tape), and e-audiobooks.

Induction loops (either fixed or portable) are also available for the hard of hearing in our libraries.

Assistive Technology and Special Needs Facilities are provided at Central Library Letterkenny, Milford, Leabharlann Phobail na Rosann, Buncrana and Bundoran libraries. You can also use voice dictation and homepage reader technology, see below for further details.

Kurzweil 3000 support software

This is especially useful for dyslexia/literacy. It is designed to help those with reading and learning difficulties and provides the user with both sound and visual representation of scanned words and images on screen.

Kurzweill 1000 Scanning and reading for the visually impaired

This is an advanced PC-based reading tool that converts the written word into speech. It is easy to use and flexible. An important feature is text enhancement for those with low vision.

A Kurzweil-compatible scanner is available for use with the above software and headphones are also available to users.

Jaws Professional for Windows

Screen reading software and magic magnification, JAWS uses a built-in voice synthesizer and the computer’s sound card to speak information from what appears on the screen.

If you need further help or information on services our library staff in your local branch will be glad to assist you.
